Upon start up, the starter engages but makes a highpitched grinding now, presumably on the flywheel. There were no shims on the old starter and so none were installed with the new one. It sounds like the starter is not engaging on the teeth of the flywheel, but I am pretty sure it was replaced with the clutch 1.5 years ago, so hopefully was
chevy 350 grinding starter. Alright, ive now had 3 different starters on my 74 chevy 350 pickup and it keeps grinding when i go to start it. The first time i took it off and saw the teeth on the starter shaft were chewed to hell so i bought a new one and again it would grind. I added shims, it would run fine for a day or 2 and act up again.

We put on starter after starter after starter, shimmed and shimmed in all combinations we could think of and still had the awful sound.

But when it would, sometimes he would have to try it 3..4..5 times before it would crank instead of grind. He finally got it checked out here about a month ago.

I have a 350 Chevy in an 3984 Monte Carlo SS and I keep having problems with the starter. I put the starter on and it starts fine but after a few times, I can hear it starting to grind a little until it doesn39t want to engage at all. Then I39ll crawl under there and shim it with a 14 inch washer wrong, I know and it will be fine again for a short while and eventually it will do it again.
