Grinton Smelt Mill also known as How Mill is a ruined lead mining and processing site on Cogden Moor, south of Grinton in Swaledale, North Yorkshire, site was built in its present form c. 1820 for the specific purpose of processing lead won by hushing and hydraulic buildings and stone flue are now grade II listed structures and all are scheduled monuments.

A typical smelt mill had an orehearth and a slaghearth, the latter being used to reprocess slags from the orehearth in order to recover further lead from the slag. Further reading. L. Levels were dug into the hillsides through caves such as Devils Hole near Grinton Smelt Mill. The last Swaledale mine closed in 1912, but there are traces from the lead mining industry across the Yorkshire Dales.

Grassington Moor is one of my favourite places in the Yorkshire Dales. Ive visited the lead mining remains on the moor many times, always as part of a longer route. However, I have never properly followed the short waymarked Grassington Moor Leadmining Trail and visited all 18 information panels.

Grinton Smelting Mill. An easy circular walk from Grinton with lots of interest. The moors above Grinton have the remains of the lead mining industry and on this walk, you will see those remains plus a well preserved smelting mill and its flue which runs up the hillside.

After less than a mile of easy walking we arrived at the site of the Old Gang Smelt Mill. One of the most substantial remains of the Swaledale39s lead mining heritage, the Old Gang complex is quite fascinating and for students of industrial archaeology a must.

Ore hearth smelt mills have existed in and near all the lead mining fields of England, though late 18th and 19th century examples were virtually confined to the Pennines from Yorkshire northwards and surviving evidence is strongly concentrated in North Yorkshire.
